Research Roundtable at the annual AATA conference in Sacramento

Dear Colleagues,

The AATA Research Committee invites art therapy researchers to present
at this year's Research Roundtable at the annual AATA conference in
Sacramento. The Roundtable is a forum for sharing ideas about
ongoing or proposed research projects. Those who are conducting pilot studies,
those who are seeking design or methodological feedback from
colleagues, or individuals eager to learn about current art therapy research may
be interested in attending.

Anyone wishing to present at this year's Roundtable should contact
Frances Kaplan, ATR-BC, Roundtable Coordinator, at (503) 699-9833 or
evefish37@comcast.net to reserve a place on the agenda. Presenters will
have an opportunity to briefly describe their work, and attendees
have a
chance to ask questions and provide feedback.

Deadline for reserving a place on the agenda is September 30, 2010.

There will be three experienced art therapists, including myself, to
direct the discussion. Further, attendance at this year's Roundtable
Panel will earn you continuing education units (CEUs).

I hope to see you in Sacramento!

The Healing Power of Art: Works of Art by Haitian Children after the Earthquake

or 35 terrifyingly long seconds this is what the children of Haiti experienced on January 12, 2010, as an earthquake forever changed the world they knew. Shortly after the devastation, the First Lady of Haiti, Madame Elisabeth D. Préval, called upon Haitian Philippe Dodard and his fellow artists to create a safe place for children to express how they had been touched by the earthquake. Plas Timoun (The Children's Place), operating from converted buses at two sites in Port-au-Prince, uses the power of art--specifically the visual and performing arts--to bring healing to the children of Haiti.

The simple works on paper created immediately following the earthquake were dark in color and imagery. Soon, however, the drawings were revealing glimmers of hope and healing. The children of Plas Timoun were using brighter colors and depicting the innocence of childhood and their visions for a brighter future, attesting to the resilience of a nation and the power of art.

With the help of Plas Timoun, these children will move more confidently toward their future and the lasting reconstruction of Haiti.

How can you support the children with art making? Make a picture of a brighter tomorrow and The National Museum of African Art will send your image to Plas Timoun.

Soldiers Use Different Kinds of Art to Cope...

I work with adolescents in military families, and have occasionally worked 1:1 with soldiers, but it seems that those in the military have been finding their own creative outlets to express themselves that are coming more to the forefront.

Here is a view of soldiers' expressions through their tattoo art:

Here is another way military are literally using their uniforms as art with the Combat Paper Project:
