Artist Trading Cards!

I've had the pleasure of participating in the 2nd swap of ATC's with the Art Therapy Alliance group. About 75 of us art therapists are participating this time around, creating 4 cards with the theme of "Collage Unleashed." I can't wait to get my 4 back in the mail in a couple of weeks!

Here are my 4 that I sent in:

About my cards:

1. This card is about the journey we are all on. A car traveling down a road, into the unknown journey ahead. Seize the day, sometimes it's "now or never," for the opportunity of a lifetime.

2. This card is about the healing power of art, which is why I included "painting for a cure." Art helps us "get the picture" in more ways than one!

3. The sunflower card is about growing, and in most cases, we like our growth to be secure. The flower is reaching towards the sun, soaking in the nourishment for the desired growth.

4. This card was all about the passion of art. It is a part of our soul, from which our passions come.

Follow all the submissions here

Here are the ATC's that I received back in the trade--Thanks!

Blog Inspiration!

There is a wealth of information out in the digital world!  Technology offers us a chance to connect with people all over the world through communication, education, shared laughter and joy, and of course through art.  There are tons of great blogs and websites that offer information and support for art therapists.  For example, here's a link to a great art therapy blog that offers step-by-step art interventions for expressive therapists.

Check it out!

The Art Therapy Catablog:
"I am a recent grad of U of L's Expressive Therapies program, and am building a small private practice... I am a mere pup in the field- yet I have already learned so much! I keep thinking, "I really need a place to record this stuff," and thus, a blog is born. My intention is to create some kind of catalog for ideas, interventions, and those rare moments of pristine clarity."

COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING and THINKKIDS.ORG

Behavior problems (e.g., noncompliance, aggressive behaviors) or problems with emotion regulation (e.g., tantrums) are arguably the most common reasons parents bring their children to treatment. The severity of these behaviors often results in diagnostic labels such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Conduct Disorder, or ADHD. Unfortunately, children with these behaviors also are often labeled as "bad children," wearing out even empathic caregivers, teachers and other adults and resulting in more angry, reactive behaviors from the adults.
The most common empirically supported treatments (ESTs) used to help children with severe behavioral problems are Parent Management treatments (e.g., Parent-Child Interaction Training (PCIT; Sheila Eyberg), Helping the Noncompliant Child (Nicholas Long & Rex Forehand), and Defiant Children (Russell Barkley)). These treatments have shown efficacy in many randomized controlled trials and are hypothesized to work through their use of behavioral principles (e.g., rewards, positive attention, and sometimes punishment). Though these treatments are largely successful, there are still many children who do not respond to Parent Management treatments.
Over the last ten years, doctors Ross Greene and Stuart Ablon have developed a new approach for treating these children called the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) approach (described in their 2006 book Treating Explosive Kids). Greene and Ablon's approach is not based on the assumption that children have "learned" to misbehave or the assumption that they intend to defy adults. Instead, they assume that behavior/emotion regulation problems in children are the result of "lagging cognitive skills" (http://thinkkids.org) or deficits in executive functions. Executive functions are functions modulated primarily by the frontal cortex and they allow people to plan, think critically, solve problems, pay attention, transition between tasks, etc. Thus, the CPS approach assumes that children behave well if they can, and that when behavior problems occur, they occur because the child is frustrated by not being able to complete required tasks...or simply because they don't understand the expectations adults have for them!
Greene and Ablon stress that we must "rethink children." We need to realize they are unable to meet expected standards rather than assuming they are simply non-compliant. The CPS approach emphasizes showing empathy toward a child when he or she encounters a "trigger" (or events that generally lead to noncompliance/a temper tantrum) and collaborating with the child to resolve problems. Therefore, those who use CPS are encouraged to figure out a child's trigger(s) so they can prevent noncompliance or meltdowns by using problem-solving. While often conceptualized as a cognitive approach, CPS depends upon the capacity to form, manage and maintain well-regulated, empathic relationships.
There are three main goals of CPS (Greene, Ablon, & Martin, 2006): first, help adults figure out which cognitive deficiencies are contributing to behavior problems; second, help adults recognize "three common options for handling problems" (pg. 611); and third, help parents and children learn to solve problems collaboratively. Greene et al. suggest that most parents either impose their will ("Plan A") or give in ("Plan C") to solve problems. Greene et al. recognize that Plans A and C sometimes work but suggest that Plan B works best. Plan B involves a parent or caregiver being able to recognize times when a child is prone to be difficult, empathize with the child, and then ask the child for input on how to make difficult situations less problematic.
CPS is a relatively new approach. However, current research (including a randomized controlled trial; Greene et. al., 2004) suggests that CPS is just as effective as Parent Management techniques, if not more effective in some regards (e.g., long term treatment effects). Based on the current level of research on this approach, CPS can at least be regarded as "possibly" or "probably" efficacious based on Chambless and Hollon's (1998) system of classifying empirically supported treatments. A set of very positive outcomes have resulted in a variety of settings where CPS has been implemented.

Student Survey: Why did you choose art therapy as a profession?

"I really feel like art therapy chose me.  I have always had an affinity for helping people, counseling others, and empathic listening.  As I moved into my college career I began to explore my own love for art and creativity and I decided that it was important for me to use my passion for art in a way that builds community and fosters social change.  Art therapy made sense to me, and through a series of detours and happenstance I keep finding my way back on this path."

"I still ask myself that. I like art and kids, but didn't want to be an art teacher. So I came to this. Which is really funny because now I'm an ...art teacher. I think the Universe has a big hand in this one. "

"Even when I was a bio/pre-med student I was majoring in art classes just so that I could get into them (my school didn't have room for non majors to take art classes past the introductory level). When I switched from biology to psychology I found art therapy. It was the perfect blend between my love of art and my love of science. And so I doubled in psychology and studio art. It just made sense for me. I'm not sure I can really explain it, other than going "YES! this is exactly what I want to do" once I found out about what art therapy was."

"I have been in an art school since I was 11 years old. I have always wanted to be an artist but I have felt a calling to represent something deeper and essentially to help others. I bounced back and forth and I was fascinated by anything that had to do with psychology. The day (when I was 13) I found that an interdisciplinary career like art therapy existed; I knew that this was what I was supposed to do. There are thousands of languages all over the world; however, there is one universal language that unifies us all and that it through a realm of images. Some of the most profound conversations that I have ever had with others were about the emotions that an image brought to us. Sometimes images leave us dumbfounded and speechless. The justification for using the image as a healing agent is prevalent throughout history, and of course it would make sense for a career in the 21st century."

Please leave us your comments and let us know why you're interested in art therapy!

"Consider how truly elegant the design process is that created us so that, in
the face of the most difficult time of our lives, there is the possibility—not
the certainty but the possibility—of access to states of awareness and
experience that enable us to cope with these crises better than we otherwise
could. And consider how remarkable it is that these states of awareness make
many people say that they feel more alive and more … than they ever felt
before."
Michael Lerner, Executive director, Commonweal

In this workshop, we will explore challenges we have faced and honor the process
that helped us survive and even thrive in the face of such adversities. We
will create "altars" using an inspiring collection of found objects, boxes, and
a delightful assortment of art supplies, to honor our resilience and
perseverance.

Previous art experience is not needed in order to benefit from this arts,
healing, and creativity program. The workshop is designed for all ranges of
artistic experience--you need not consider yourself an
artist to attend.

Objectives 1) Attendees will be able to define resilience and its role in
surviving and thriving.

Objectives 2) Attendees will be able to list three strategies for moving from
surviving to thriving despite difficult experiences we have either faced in the
past or are facing now.

Lunch is not provided but healthy, reasonably priced restaurants are available

The Mandala serves to move us towards psychological growth,
expressing the idea of a safe refuge, inner reconciliation and wholeness
(Carl G. Jung, Mandala Symbolism)

Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning circle (Manda—essence, La--container).
Mandalas have traditionally been associated with spiritual practice and
self-exploration. They have been used to help focus attention, to clear the
mind, to access deeper levels of consciousness, to attain spiritual connection
and knowledge, and to work towards wholeness and integration.

In this brief but focused workshop, we will use mandala imagery, writing, and
meditative practice to explore connection between ourselves and others.

Previous art experience is not needed in order to benefit from this arts,
healing, and creativity program. The workshop is designed for all ranges of
artistic experience.

Objectives 1) Attendees will be able to list three ways that mandalas have been
used therapeutically in the past.
