Free Hugs!

Just as an example of the many things that can come out of art therapy, this piece was what one client created when given some Model Magic clay and allowed to make a sculpture of anything she wanted. She responded with creating one of the characters from a favorite cartoon of hers, Pon and Zi. [posted with permission] Hope it makes your day happy!

AATA Review: EEG use during Art Therapy

Recently, the AATA journal published a study in which an investigator connected a client up to an EEG machine while they created art work. Click here to read more.

Related to using EEGs with clients during art therapy, there is a field of neuro-feedback that offers training on using EEG machines to control states of mind. Just as Art Therapy has an international yahoo chat group (AiT) - so too neuro-feedback practitioners share information over yahoo e-mail under the group name: Braintrainer. I signed up for their e-mails and discovered that there are specific brain signals which correspond to creativity, namely: theta.  An interesting site on brainwaves can be found at this link.

Apparently, the brain can be trained to produce a higher frequency of certain brainwaves. I'm curious if art therapy could facilitate this training. There has been a rise in popularity of using EEG machines in therapy

Some claim that artistic ability can improve through neurofeedback. There is even a BBC article describing how brain training can improve musicianship.

EEG machines vary in cost may be bought second hand. Chat groups, like the one mentioned previously would be an ideal place to find a used machine.

This video will give you an idea of what neurofeedback is and how it is used:

What art therapy graduate program teaches about Neuroscience???

Noah Hass-Cohen is proving to be a leader in combining Art Therapy and Neuroscience. She teaches at the Phillips Institute. Here's an excerpt on that school:

"...the Phillips Graduate Institute Art Therapy Program emphasizes and recognizes... the relevance of clinically applied neuroscience to the field."

Mastering the Meaning of Mandalas with Carol Cox & Alysa Muller

Mastering the Meaning of Mandalas
Sponsored by the Art Therapy Program of George Washington University

“…I sketched every morning in a notebook a small circular drawing, a mandala, which seemed to correspond with my inner situation at the time. With the help of these drawings,
I could observe my psychic transformation from day to day. ... my mandalas were cryptograms… In them I saw the self–that is, my whole being–actively at work. To be sure at first I could only dimly understand them; but they seemed to be highly significant, and I guarded them like precious pearls. I had the distinct feeling that they were something central and in time I acquired through them a living conception of the self...”
C. G. Jung in Memories, Dreams, and Reflections

This three-day course trains participants to explore in depth the dynamics of the mandala. The main focus is on the therapeutic use of the mandala drawing based on the pioneering work of the visionary art therapist Joan Kellogg. Building upon her clinical experience, Kellogg incorporated states of consciousness research with Jungian theory and cross-cultural studies to develop a system based on form, symbol, color, and movement for understanding patterns and shapes in the images of mandalas. Her theoretical model provides a symbolic way to map stages of psychological growth from before birth to after death, incorporating psychosocial, physiological, and spiritual aspects of human development. Participants will learn how to apply Kellogg’s life cycle theory when assessing the meaning of mandala drawings. What to ask clients to encourage dialogue will also be taught as a way to enhance skills in interpretation. Appropriate for practitioners in the fields of mental health, expressive therapies, and pastoral and spiritual counseling, this course includes lectures, slides, meditation, music, and experiential mandala art.

*DESCRIPTION*

The mandala is a circular drawing, well known by Jungians as an indicator of
internal processes. Jung referred to it as a "cryptogram (coded message)
concerning the state of the self." This mandala course includes concepts
from psychosocial, physiological, and spiritual perspectives as they relate
to our understanding of the meaning of colors and images found in mandala
drawings.

Participants will be introduced to the mandala drawing and learn how to use
it as a diagnostic and healing tool in work with others and for themselves.
This course will include the historical background of the mandala form as
seen in nature, art, myth, architecture, religion and ritual. The format
will include lecture, illustrative slides, film and experiential activities
including mandala art and poetry writing. It is based on Kellogg's theory of
the 13 Archetypal Stages in the Great Round of the Mandala, a comprehensive
model for the development of human consciousness that fits into all cycles.
Kellogg incorporated states of consciousness research with Jungian theory
and cross-cultural studies, and theorized an organized system based on form,
color, and symbols for understanding mandala drawings. This developmental
model includes issues around birth, life, death, and rebirth and provides a
map of human consciousness and evolution.

This training is for therapists, especially art or expressive therapists,
or others in the fields of mental health, pastoral or spiritual counseling,
or those interested in knowing more about this subject for their own growth
and healing.

EAST AFRICA THIS SUMMER !

ATTENTION ARTS THERAPISTS!
PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING US IN EAST AFRICA THIS SUMMER TO
HELP INITIATE A THERAPEUTIC ARTS PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN!
Background
Global Alliance for Africa is a non-profit organization based in Chicago
(USA), Monrovia (Liberia), Nairobi (Kenya) and Arusha (Tanzania). GAA's
mission is to work in partnership with African organizations to improve the
lives of children in Africa who have been orphaned or otherwise made
vulnerable by the AIDS pandemic. In 2006, GAA initiated an arts program for
orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya and Tanzania. For the past three
years, groups of American artists, teachers and students have traveled to
East Africa with Global Alliance to visit arts programs and work closely
with African artists to plan and conduct an annual art camp for children.
Development of Therapeutic Arts Program

The staff of GAA are interested in developing an ongoing, multi-site
therapeutic arts program in East Africa that addresses the psychosocial and
vocational needs of children and their caregivers.

In the summer of 2009 a small group of arts therapists from the U.S. will
join with arts facilitators in East Africa who are interested in developing
their skills and knowledge in relation to the therapeutic applications of
the arts. Initially, the therapeutic arts group will join with approximately
15 American artists, students, and teachers who will travel with GAA to
participate in the annual art camps for children. This combined group of
artists, teachers, students, art therapists, and arts facilitators from the
U.S. and East Africa will work with children in the Kibera Slum of Nairobi,
Kenya, Naivasha (Central Kenya), Lwak (Western Kenya), and Arusha, Tanzania.

The group will then gather at Bagomoyo College of Art in Tanzania, on the
coast of the Indian Ocean, to work and study together on the topic of
therapeutic applications of the arts. The trainings will be facilitated by
Cathy Moon, the Chair of the Art Therapy Department at the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and Angela Lyonsmith, art therapy faculty member
at SAIC and art therapist in private practice. The trainings will be
structured as an exchange of cultural and professional knowledge, with the
goal of initiating therapeutic arts programs in the East African context.

British Special Interest Group: Art Therapy in Neurology

Today, I stumbled upon a website on art therapy for clients with various brain injuries. The organization is called Art Therapy in Neurology and they seem to be a very new organization but they also seem very enthusiastic. The site might appeal to people who are interested in working with clients who have neurological problems. Currently, they only have around 14 members but their website is suggesting collaboration. If you're interested in this, they might be able to suggest resources and reading materials.
