Chapter Spotlight: Potomac Art Therapy Association (PATA)
By: Gioia Chilton, ATR-BC, Blogger & Publications Chair

The Potomac Art Therapy Association (PATA) was created in 1975 to increase contact and communication among art therapists in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. Since its inception, PATA has grown and expanded services to its membership and the community.

PATA has over 100 members! Since 2007, PATA's Blog http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102658744625&s=649&e=001qGMmieDpTxwRPNNfy6HetMOjAR4-v6dhLa-MhNlScjP4vQCEzrkjNjKbOsKVdpU9HPv-_JOVYmaaVjUjB1gsWfnuAXQ2I4E2yJTrref9MJgMfwBPqm_xv41oR9U6QzZhvnJMHwyCuYtAgjS7BfBlEA== has allowed us to stay more current and connected as an art therapy community in and around Washington, DC. Information about upcoming workshops, legislative action, art slide shows, and job and scholarship opportunities are frequently posted. Feel free to follow our blog if you'd like to be in touch.
Led by Elva Anderson, MPS, ATR, PATA's Multi-cultural committee promoted a series of film screenings in 2008-2009. PATA's aim was to eliminate negative stereotypes by presenting information through film and other types of artistic formats and to encourage appreciation and discussion of other cultures. In February, the series culminated in the showing of the award winning documentary 'Born Into Brothels,' which chronicles the use of photography through the eyes of children living in the red light district of Calcutta, India (The Co-Executive Producer, Pamela Tanner Boll is a Keynote Speaker at the 2009 AATA Conference!). The event was held at the lively Busboys and Poets restaurant & bookstore as a part of their 'Focus in! Cinema for a Conscious Community' series. After the screening, PATA's guest speaker Sangeeta Prasad, ATR-BC, led a discussion on her experiences as an art therapist working with children in India and the USA. The large audience participated in an engaging conversation with Ms. Prasad.

In the spring, PATA's Alternate Chapter Delegate, Rebecca Wilkinson, MA, ATR-BC led two board retreats. The retreats were well attended and much ground was covered. In May, at the "Focusing on our Vision," we delved into the rich information that was generated from our initial Visioning Retreat in March. At this second retreat, the board identified concurrent planning for the following areas: updating our current website, interfacing with the public, increasing membership, creating an operating budget, and starting the nominating process for the 2010-2012 PATA board.

In May and June, The Potomac Art Therapy Association was proud to be featured at Artomatic, DC's one-of-a-kind multimedia event, involving an art show and performances by hundreds of regional artists, musicians, and poets. PATA promoted art therapy to the general public in the Automatic Arts Resource Center, by offering informational brochures, posters, and a free informal lecture led by PATA board member Gioia Chilton.
In July PATA held its Open Board Meeting at the newly opened National Office for AATA in Alexandria, Virginia. AATA has created an art display for Chapters, and PATA was honored to be the first participant in the gallery.

Under the energetic leadership of current President, Amy Tatsumi, MA, ATR and incoming President, Deborah Bunkley, MA, PATA is looking forward to continued efforts in 2010.
