About the Workshop:
This workshop will present relevant information on the impact of various types of interpersonal, complex trauma on normative development.  Specifically, the child’s identity, self-esteem, biological, sexual, social, and emotional growth will be viewed through the lens of traumatic impact. In addition to children’s adverse experiences, the presence of mediating factors will also be addressed with an emphasis on the presence of attuned and empathic care giving, systems of safe response, and personal traits of resiliency.  Play therapy will be highlighted as a method for both assessing children’s functioning as well as affording children opportunities for self-reparation.  An integrative approach will highlight the incorporation of play therapy strategies with other recognized approaches such as CBT.  Case examples of play, art, and sand therapy approaches will be provided.

Participants will be able to:
-Apply state of the art research findings on children’s post-trauma functioning to understanding and working with the common consequences of trauma on child development, including dissociation and PTSD;
 -  Identify consensus area for treatment of childhood trauma, particularly interpersonal complex trauma, and describe rationale for the use of play therapy to treat childhood trauma;
 - Utilize an integrative, developmentally-sensitive trauma treatment model, including how to use play therapy techniques in assessment and treatment;
